Firm Foundation for Health Care
by Judy Olvey, Assistant Christian Science Committee on Publication
Reprinted from The Arizona Daily Star (Tucson, Arizona) Letter to the Editor, May 13, 2002

Howard Fischer reported on a recent activity in the Legislature ("Prayer care for kids gets no new protection," April 19). This decision by the Legislature is not representative of the movement toward alternative methods of health care that have been embraced by our pluralistic society.
The article focused on Christian Scientists, since they were the ones speaking up for children to have access to the very best health care available.

An amendment was offered using the term "health care" in place of "medical care," so the law would not mandate only one method of treatment. My children were the third generation in our family to have benefited from prayer that heals. Having been healed as a child and throughout my life, I feel it is natural to trust prayer to meet my needs. I found security in the spiritual laws taught and practiced by Jesus. This gave me a firm foundation to effectively care for my children and has proved to me that it is the best health care that can be had.
